What is EXIF data, and why remove the location?

Every photo your phone or camera takes is saved with a block of hidden metadata called EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format). It records useful things — the date and time — but also sensitive ones: the precise GPS coordinates of where you were standing, the camera’s make and model, and sometimes serial numbers. When you post or send that photo, the location tag usually rides along with it.

For a night out, that means a photo from your front door can quietly broadcast your home address. Stripping the location before you share is the simple fix — and it’s what this tool does, entirely on your device.

Frequently asked questions

Does this upload my photo anywhere?
No. The whole thing runs in your browser using JavaScript — your photo is read, cleaned, and saved locally on your device. Nothing is ever sent to a server.
What data gets removed?
GPS coordinates (where the photo was taken), camera make and model, software, and lens/body serial numbers. The date the photo was taken is deliberately kept so your timeline still makes sense.
Will the image quality change?
No. This is a surgical metadata edit — the actual pixels are untouched, so there's no re-compression and no quality loss.
What file types work?
JPEG (.jpg / .jpeg) — the format nearly every camera and phone exports. HEIC and RAW aren't supported here yet.
